Editor Tips

Tables, special characters, locked blocks, shared folders and other handy things in the page editor.

Tables

Click ▦ Table in the toolbar, choose the number of rows and columns and whether to include a header row, and click Insert. Once a table is in the page:

  • Hover a row and a small toolbar appears in its first cell: +row adds a row below it, and 🗑 deletes the row. The last remaining row can't be deleted.
  • +col on the table's own toolbar adds a column at the right edge. There's no delete-column button; to remove a column, switch to Code view.
  • Tab moves to the next cell and Shift+Tab to the previous one, wrapping to the next row. At the very first or last cell, Tab behaves normally.
  • The table's ⚙ cog opens its attributes: ID, class, a Locked option, and Layout table. Tick Layout table only if the table is used purely to position things rather than to show data — it tells screen readers not to treat it as a data table.

For tables of repeating data that you'll keep adding to — a price list, a directory — consider a List instead.

Special characters

Ω Symbols opens a picker of special characters — dashes, ©, ®, ™, degree and plus-minus signs, fractions, currency symbols and more. Click one and it's inserted at your cursor.

Locking a block

Hover near the top of a block or container, click its ⚙ cog, and tick Locked. A locked element's contents can't be typed into, so someone editing the page can't accidentally retype or mangle a carefully designed section — but you can still move it up or down with the block's toolbar. Untick the box to edit it again. See Working with Blocks.

Cloning a page

The ⧉ icon next to a page starts a new page from it — see Creating a Page.

Preview controls

👁️ Hide Preview gives the editor the whole width; ↗ Open in Window pops the preview into a separate resizable window that's ideal for checking different screen widths on a second monitor. The preview keeps its scroll position as you type.

Working from a shared folder

If your project lives on a shared drive or a synced folder (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive), someone else might change a page while you have it open. WebHaste notices before it overwrites their work and asks: OK keeps your version and overwrites theirs, Cancel discards your changes in the editor and loads the newer version from disk. If you move on to another page while the question is still open, WebHaste saves a safety copy of your edit in .webhaste/backups/ so nothing is lost.

This protection covers pages and, when template editing is turned on, templates, stylesheets and scripts. It's a safety net, not a substitute for agreeing who's editing what.

Switching projects

The Recent Projects menu at the top of the window jumps between projects you've opened lately. Chrome occasionally asks you to reconnect access to a folder — it's a one-click browser security step.
